California Highway Patrol found the body of, a 21-year old man, on Interstate 10 near Cedar Avenue the other day. He was found against a metal guardrail on the center divider. They believe he might be the victim of a hit-and-run.
Police believe he was walking in the fast lane on the freeway, although they are not sure. They are not sure how long the body has been there. They could not find an abandoned vehicle anywhere in the area; however, they did find debris from a black vehicle near the body.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or with any information regarding it, to call Officer John Avila at 909-383-4247.

A man, 69-year old man, charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter in the crash that killed a 3-year old girl, in 2008, pleaded no contest in Pomona Superior Court. The little girl was walking with her 5-year old sister and father near a school in Diamond Bar when the incident occurred. The man’s Pathfinder went over the curb and struck the little girl; she died 24 hours later.
A sergeant from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department said the man was dropping off his children at the school when he lost control of his SUV.
The judge sentenced the man to 3 years of probation and 400 hours of community service at a local hospital. He is also ordered to pay an unknown amount of restitution to the family of this little girl.
My condolences go out to the family and friends of this little girl.

During a recent rainstorm, a 15-year old Crestline boy was critically injured while he was a passenger in a vehicle heading south.
According to San Bernardino police, the driver was driving south on Highway 18 when he lost control of his vehicle, crossing into the northbound lanes. He crashed into a vehicle driven by a woman of Running Springs.
The young boy suffered severe injuries and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center for medical treatment.
Police believe the heavy rain and fog contributed to this accident.

A man wanted to be a professional cyclist but that dream ended recently when he was killed by a high school senior, who lost control of his car while racing down the street with passengers and another vehicle on the wrong side of the road. His car went across traffic and ended on the shoulder where the man was riding alone. The impact threw him into the field where he died.
The high school students were not arrested, pending an investigation. None of the students was injured. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. It seems racing is common on the desolate stretch of road.
My heart goes out to the man’s family.

How awful for that man who was seriously injured by not one, but two cars while crossing Highway 18 recently – according to the San Bernardino Sun. One of the vehicles was driven by a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy. Both drivers stopped to help the injured pedestrian. He was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for major injuries.
The accident is under investigation. The San Bernardino Sheriff’s department is asking anyone who witnessed this accident to call them at 760-240-7400. No one knows why the individual stepped in front of the vehicles and it is believed that he may not have been in a crosswalk.
Pedestrians are required to cross the street legally and walk in designated areas, such as a crosswalk. Motorists are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians who use a crosswalk. I urge the family of this man to find out where he crossed. I also hope the man did not suffer any catastrophic injuries and has a speedy recovery.

The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin recently reported that a 22-year old man was critically injured when a car hit him on March 28 at the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Oaks Avenue in Ontario. The driver of that car left the scene without stopping. He was lying in the road when police arrived.
Police believe the man might have gotten into an argument with the other driver while at the intersection. They are investigating whether the driver deliberately hit the man. Police are asking anyone who witnessed this accident to contact them at 909-986-6711.
Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime in California; the driver should have remained until the police arrived. According to California Vehicle Code Section 20001, “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

An area like Lake Arrowhead has many tourist attractions and tourists; it also has a lot of snow and ice. Because of all this snow and ice, business owners must make sure their sidewalks and parking lots are clear and safe so pedestrians do not slip and fall.
The Salt Institute, located in Alexandria, Virginia conducted a survey several years ago with county and municipal agencies regarding their sidewalk snow clearing practices. The study showed that 83% of the agencies had policies requiring business owners to remove snow and ice “within 24 hours of the end of the snowstorm.” If the business owner did not comply, their penalties would range from a ticket to misdemeanors punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or fines of up to $500.
Of course, if a pedestrian slipped and fell, the business owner could face a lawsuit alleging negligence. If you have fallen in front of a business that neglected to remove the snow and/or ice from in front of their store, I would suggest you contact an experienced Personal Injury attorney who will know California laws and take the required actions against this business owner on your behalf.

A Loma Linda woman was killed in a fatal car crash in Highland recently. Evidence found while investigating was turned over to the San Bernardino County sheriff’s homicide department. The evidence is unknown at this time.
A 20-year old man driving on Boulder Avenue at 4:35 a.m. crashed into a light pole. His 20-year old woman passenger died at the scene. The young man is in critical condition.
It will be interesting to see the cause of this accident and a young woman’s death.
