A 46-year old Chino Hills woman was hit by a hit-and-run driver in a pickup truck the other morning as she stepped off the curb. Although the 63-year old driver tried to avoid hitting the woman, he did not.  Instead of stopping, he fled the scene.

However, he did turn himself in to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department several hours later.  Police stated that the woman has a diminished mental capacity and may have stepped into traffic intentionally.  She was taken by air to a nearby hospital and treated for moderate injuries.

The man was arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of felony hit and run; he is being held on $50,000 bail and is scheduled for arraignment at the end of the week.

Those people out for a nice late-night chicken dinner got more than they bargained for the other night.  A chicken restaurant in Barstow, for the second time in two years, was the scene of a car crash.

Barstow Police reported that a driver hit a ladder and scaffold outside the restaurant, causing them to fall against the window and break it.  The car also crashed into a fence and portable restaurant sign.

The driver got out of the car and fled on foot.  He was apprehended three miles away and booked on suspicion of being involved in a hit-and-run crash.  He remains in jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.  Lucky for him no one was injured; however, I am sure the owner of the restaurant will file a lawsuit for damage to his property.  I suggest he contact an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who can discuss next steps with him.

A 20-year old man, was killed by a pickup truck while crossing a street in San Bernardino recently.  The driver, a 20-year old man drove away from the scene leaving a critically injured victim.

According to California Vehicle Code 2001(a), “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”  In addition, California Vehicle Code Section 23152(a) states, “Driving under the influence is also a serious crime.”

Authorities caught up to him and arrested him on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and felony drunk driving.  I would like to extend my condolences to the family of the man for their tragic loss.  I hope the family contacts an experienced San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who will make sure the negligent party is held accountable for this fatal accident.  The family would be wise to file a wrongful death claim seeking medical and funeral expenses along with loss of a loved one.

A California Highway Patrol officer, died near Barstow when he pulled a speeding car over early the other morning on Interstate 15 in Barstow.  Another car, driven by 18-year old man, crashed into the patrol car, hitting the officer.

The officer was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Apple Valley.  He died a short time later from the injuries he sustained; his partner was not hurt.  The 18-year old man was arrested for vehicular manslaughter.  The man is at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga where his bail is $500,000.  He pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter, child endangerment (12-year old boy was a passenger in his car) and transportation of marijuana.  If convicted, he can serve up to eight years in prison.

The officer is the fifth officer to die in the last two months on California roadways.  My sympathies go out to the officer’s wife and children, ages 7, 4 and 1.

It does not seem that long ago since a 12-year old boy was injured while skateboarding on the shoulder of a Hesperia street.  The driver of a pickup truck, crashed into him.  The young boy suffered major head trauma and a compound fracture to one of his legs.

According to a report made by the California Highway Patrol a few years back, Hesperia only reported 5 deaths and a little over 30 injuries involving alcohol-related accidents.  The man was arrested for suspicion of a felony DUI.

I hope the family of this young boy contacted a Personal Injury attorney who is experienced in making sure negligent and drunk drivers are held responsible for their actions.  He or she can also advise the family what to do if the negligent driver had no insurance or not enough insurance to compensate them for all of their expenses.

This young man is in my prayers for a speedy recovery.

The Sherriff’s department arrested four individuals in three separate traffic accidents the weekend of March 13, 2010 – all involving alcohol or drugs.  One is an active-duty Marine.  He was arrested on suspicion of DUI after hitting two parked vehicles early Saturday morning.  After taking several field sobriety tests, he was arrested and booked in the Morongo Basin jail – released later that day.

In another incident, a 19-year old girl lost control of her truck and hit a utility pole.  The driver and her passenger, an 18-year old girl, were found to be under the influence of alcohol when sheriff deputies arrived.  The driver was arrested for DUI while the passenger was arrested for being drunk in public.  They, also, were booked in the Morongo Basin jail and released later.

The third accident involved a 21-year old man speeding on the Twentynine Palms Highway when he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to roll several times.  His passenger, a 22-year old woman was knocked unconscious during the incident.  She was treated at a local hospital for head and neck injuries.  The driver, who abandoned his vehicle, was located later on and arrested on suspicion of felony DUI causing injuries to another.  He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga and held on $100,000 bail.

It is unfortunate that four people were involved and hurt – all because of alcohol and/or drugs.
