As a reminder, properly used child safety seats can reduce childhood deaths by as much a 70 percent. It is unfortunate to note that 9 out of 10 car seats are incorrectly installed. Thousands of young children are killed or severely injured in car accidents each year. It is important to keep your child safe when riding in a vehicle. The type of seat your child needs depends on his or her size and age.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all infants ride rear-facing. This includes the day they come home from the hospital after birth. All infants and toddlers should ride this way until they are at least two years old or until they reach a certain height and weight – ask your pediatrician.
As the child gets older – toddler to preschooler (2 years old+), they should ride in a convertible seat that faces forward with a safety harness. Younger school-aged children should ride in a booster seat facing forward. When children are old enough, they can use the safety of the vehicle seat belt for protection.
The law requires children under the age of 14 to be properly protected while sitting in an automobile. If your child is injured in an automobile accident due to improper child restraints, the manufacturer of the car seat may be held liable. Contact a San Bernardino Personal Injury attorney who is qualified and experienced with child car seat laws – who will explain your legal rights and options to you.
