A California Highway Patrol officer, died near Barstow when he pulled a speeding car over early the other morning on Interstate 15 in Barstow. Another car, driven by 18-year old man, crashed into the patrol car, hitting the officer.
The officer was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Apple Valley. He died a short time later from the injuries he sustained; his partner was not hurt. The 18-year old man was arrested for vehicular manslaughter. The man is at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga where his bail is $500,000. He pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter, child endangerment (12-year old boy was a passenger in his car) and transportation of marijuana. If convicted, he can serve up to eight years in prison.
The officer is the fifth officer to die in the last two months on California roadways. My sympathies go out to the officer’s wife and children, ages 7, 4 and 1.
